Work Party Information

A work party is a gardening session organised by Oakham in Bloom to plant, maintain and tidy the Oakham in Bloom beds.  A group of volunteers get together all throughout the year, generally once a week to work on a specific bed.

What do I need to bring?

Volunteers usually bring small hand tools such as secateurs, trowels and forks or any small suitable hand tools. You may also want to bring gardening gloves If you do not own these items they are usually available to borrow. If any specific tools are needed it will be stated in the work party email. You might also want to bring a bottle of water and any snacks if desired.

What is provided?

An Oakham in Bloom Hi Vis Waistcoat with the Oakham in Bloom logo on it.

Where do I park?

It does depend where the work party is taking place. In the centre of town the car park are usually free on Sundays so you don't need to worry about paying for parking. For other locations, feel free to park anywhere suitable nearby. If you are unsure where to park, email the work party organiser and they will be able to help. Our locations are also normally accessible by bike or on foot.

How often do they take place?

Generally the work parties take place once a week on a Sunday morning at 9am. However, work parties can take place any day of the week more generally in the morning.

We occasionally hold smaller, more casual work parties in the weekday evenings. These generally involve doing some tidying jobs around the town.

Do I have to come to every work party?

Nope! Come whenever you are free and fancy it. There's no obligation when you sign up.

Do I need gardening experience?

People of all gardening skill levels are welcome. Our more experienced gardeners are happy to show newer gardeners the ropes. If you've not gardened before don't let that put you off. There are a range of jobs taking place at work parties to suit all skill levels.

If you are an experienced gardener or horticulturist, and would like to be involved in the discussion around what we plant and where, please get in touch with our Chair at chairatoib@gmail.com

What tasks take place at a work party?

When we send out the details of the next work party we generally include what sort of work will take place at it. These normally include general maintenance, planting and weeding. We occasionally have bigger work parties where we are under taking bigger revamps of our beds.

Are there toilets?

Public toilets are available on Church Street.
